April 2025 marks a major milestone for Ellona. Through a strategic tour in Latin America, Jean-Christophe Mifsud, President of Ellona, met with key players in the environmental sector in Colombia and Chile. This visit was focused on technology, expertise, and sustainable partnerships, all aimed at a common goal: building a healthier and more responsible future.
As part of this initiative, several meetings were held with representatives from the Colombian and Chilean Ministries of Environment, addressing critical issues related to air quality and odour management. These discussions highlighted Ellona’s unique contribution to the new regulatory dynamics, thanks to its cutting-edge technological approach.
What sets our solution apart is its ability to precisely correlate measured data with dynamic olfactometry results, a central requirement in emerging regulations in Latin America, particularly in Colombia. Additionally, our smart sensors allow for the fine identification of odour sources, whether they be clarifiers, biofilters, or other critical installations at industrial and treatment sites.
But most importantly, our technology doesn’t just measure: it acts. Thanks to real-time analysis and customizable thresholds, our systems can automatically trigger corrective actions or alerts, fundamentally transforming odor nuisance management from a reactive approach to a proactive, integrated, and controllable strategy.
Medellín, Colombia – Innovation, partnerships, and sector recognition
Ellona’s strategic visit began in Medellín, during the International Congress on Odours, organized by ACODAL, a major event that brought together more than 200 specialists from the sectors of environment, health, agri-food, and chemicals.
At the opening of the conferences, Ellona had the honor of speaking alongside internationally recognized figures such as Carlos Nietzsche Diaz, Robert Corrales, and Jaime Cardona. On this occasion, Jean-Christophe Mifsud, our President, presented Ellona’s intelligent odour and air quality monitoring solutions, which rely on next-generation sensors combined with advanced artificial intelligence.
To concretely illustrate the impact of these technologies, he highlighted the case of SIAAP, Europe’s largest wastewater treatment plant, located in Paris – an iconic reference demonstrating the relevance and robustness of Ellona’s solutions in the field.
🔗 Key partners for a successful establishment in Colombia: HTE – High Tec Environmental Ltda, and TQI – Total Quality Instruments, are our trusted local partners. Both have played a crucial role in logistics, technical coordination, and the promotion of our presence at the Congress. Thanks to the commitment of Juan Nicolas Rodriguez Segura (HTE) and his team, as well as the strong expertise of TQI, our collaboration with Colombian industrial players has been significantly strengthened.
We have already equipped several wastewater treatment plants in the country, in partnership with major players in the sector, delivering concrete results. Our analyses go beyond measuring H₂S levels and are correlated with dynamic olfactometry, a fundamental parameter given the new Colombian regulations on odours, which now mandate the implementation of this method to ensure regulatory compliance.
Together, we have been able to demonstrate how Ellona solutions, like the WT1 Pro, enable a shift from a reactive to a proactive environmental management strategy, integrating continuous measurement, intelligent analysis, precise identification of odour sources, and real-time visualization.
🙏 We extend a warm thank you to HTE and TQI for their mobilization, their shared vision of environmental innovation, and their active role in raising awareness among Colombian industries about disruptive technologies.
🎉 The 25th anniversary celebration of GSA SAS, a leading company in environmental engineering in Colombia, was also a highlight of this stage. Jean-Christophe Mifsud was warmly welcomed, with a special mention for Ellona in Jaime Cardona’s speech, reinforcing the human and professional bonds that unite our teams.
Chile – Industrialization of solutions and regulatory exchanges
Second stop, second intensity: heading to Chile, where air quality issues are taking on an industrial dimension. In Coronel, in the Biobío region, we visited the strategic site of Cargill, a leader in aquaculture feed production. Our WT1 Pro solution is already operational there, bringing rigor, reliability, and environmental performance.
Several dozen WT1 Pro systems are already deployed across various Chilean industries – wastewater treatment plants, waste treatment units, agri-food, and petrochemicals – demonstrating the ability of our technologies to meet a wide range of contexts and needs.
Continuing from this visit, in Concepción, Ellona participated in a high-level seminar organized by our Chilean partner PROTERM S.A., focusing on the regulatory challenges related to Chilean odor emissions standards, and bringing together numerous key industrial players. Our teams presented their innovative approach, based on MOS sensors, multivariate analysis, and intelligent atmospheric dispersion models – a combination praised for its scientific relevance and operational effectiveness.
Santiago – A grand finale at the International Odour Congress
It was in Santiago, the capital of Chile, that this business trip came to an end, during the International Odour Congress organized by AMIGO. This flagship event brought together more than 250 participants, including engineers, researchers, industrialists, and policymakers, all gathered around a common goal: to reinvent odour management for the cities and industries of tomorrow.
Among the highlights was the notable presentation by Daniela Caimanque Fredez from the Chilean Ministry of Environment, who presented the national roadmap for odour management, establishing Chile as a regional pioneer in environmental regulation.
Ellona, present at the booth of its partner PROTERM S.A., highlighted its WT1 Pro solution, demonstrating the relevance and concrete impact of its technologies within an ambitious regulatory framework. PROTERM also significantly showcased the WT1 Pro by delivering three technical presentations led by José Luis Daroch and Miguel Gatica, illustrating real-world use cases of the WT1 Pro in the field.
These presentations highlighted not only the ability of the WT1 Pro to support odour and gas impact studies, but most importantly, its capability to quantify the effectiveness of remediation systems – particularly misting systems – and to automatically trigger their activation based on predefined thresholds. This point is crucial for meeting current requirements for nuisance control and positions Ellona as a strategic technological player in intelligent environmental management solutions.
An international ambition driven by technology and human connections
Beyond the numbers, the trade shows, and the technical demonstrations, this tour perfectly illustrates what makes Ellona strong: a solid and reliable technology, sustainable partnerships, and a clear vision for a cleaner and more responsible future.
In Colombia and Chile, we have measured the magnitude of the challenges… but also the immense enthusiasm for solutions like ours, which combine scientific precision, technological agility, and real-world impact.
