Issues
A company specializing in yeast production for the food industry in Aurillac, Cantal, faces challenges related to odor emissions generated by its industrial activities, particularly sulfur and amine compounds. These emissions impact employees and residents, especially with the recent residential expansion around the site. Despite existing measures such as the installation of activated carbon beds, complaints persisted, leading local authorities to require audits in accordance with EN 13725. To strengthen its odor control efforts, the company chose Ellona's solutions.
SOLUTION
To address these challenges, Ellona deployed the WT1 Pro continuous odor emission monitoring system. This advanced system integrates various sensors, including H₂S detectors, mercaptan sensors, and Metal Oxide Sensors (MOS) for precise odor fingerprint analysis.
To ensure reliable measurements even in the presence of humid gases, the WT1 Pro is connected to the emissions via a heated transfer line and includes a DRYER system.
Samples conforming to EN 13725 standards were analyzed using dynamic olfactometry at OLENTICA. A correlation model based on Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression was developed to validate the data collected by the WT1 Pro, ensuring continuous and reliable measurement accuracy.
The solution also includes the EllonaSoft centralized analysis platform, which facilitates real-time data collection, processing, and interpretation. This platform helps site managers track emissions, diagnose issues, and take immediate corrective actions.
KEY RESULTS
The implementation of the WT1 Pro system by Ellona has yielded tangible results for the company. Real-time monitoring of gas and odor emissions has ensured rapid responsiveness in the event of exceeding acceptable thresholds. The odor treatment system, including the activated carbon bed, is now continuously monitored, allowing for proactive filter replacements before saturation.
The number of complaints from residents has significantly decreased, thereby improving community relations and the company’s reputation in the region. Continuous monitoring and precise data have facilitated constructive dialogue with local regulators, reducing the need for frequent audits.
In conclusion, the adoption of the WT1 Pro system has not only effectively enhanced the management of odor emissions but also demonstrated the company’s commitment to environmental protection and the well-being of the local community.
