Issues

As part of our partnership with JCDecaux, a global leader in urban furniture management, this study aims to assess the cleanliness of public self-cleaning toilets in real time using Ellona’s innovative technologies. Public self-cleaning toilets play a crucial role in urban infrastructure by providing sanitary facilities to citizens and visitors, thereby contributing to comfort and well-being in densely populated urban areas. Maintaining high standards of cleanliness is essential to ensure their continued use and user satisfaction.

SOLUTION

To address this objective, we implemented a rigorous methodology:

  1. Data collection and preprocessing: We compiled a comprehensive dataset including 17 environmental variables measured inside JCDecaux public toilets. These variables include air quality indicators (CO₂, PM2.5), temperature, humidity, noise levels, and other critical parameters.
  2. Deployment of advanced sensors: We integrated next-generation POD2 sensors to monitor environmental conditions in real time. These sensors continuously measure CO₂ levels, fine particles (PM2.5), temperature, relative humidity, noise levels, as well as other key factors influencing air quality and user comfort.
  3. Data analysis: An in-depth analysis was conducted to identify trends and correlations between variables, enabling the selection of the most significant parameters for modeling environmental quality inside the facilities.
  4. Air quality modeling: We developed a predictive model based on a classification tree (CHAID) to assess air cleanliness in real time. This model enables continuous monitoring and early alerts in case of environmental quality degradation.
  5. Analysis of specific events: We identified external factors such as peak hours and days of the week that significantly impact environmental quality. This analysis allowed us to recommend adaptive strategies to maintain optimal sanitary conditions based on observed fluctuations.

KEY RESULTS

Through the integration of advanced POD2 sensors from ELLONA and real-time data analysis with the EllonaSoft platform, we have achieved the following results:

  • Model performance: The classification tree-based model demonstrated a 97% accuracy in predicting air quality inside JC Decaux’s sanitation units, validating its effectiveness for real-time monitoring.
  • Key variables: Parameters such as temperature, humidity, and noise level were identified as the primary determinants of the environmental quality within the sanitation units.
  • Recommendations: Based on our findings, we recommend integrating additional sensors to monitor other aspects, such as specific odors, and adjusting cleaning protocols according to observed variations.

This study highlights the importance and feasibility of real-time monitoring of the cleanliness of JC Decaux’s sanitation units using advanced technologies. By implementing these solutions, JC Decaux can not only enhance user satisfaction by ensuring optimal sanitary conditions but also optimize operational management of its services. This work paves the way for proactive urban infrastructure management, contributing to a cleaner, safer, and more pleasant urban environment for everyone.
