Issues

In 2022, an automotive supplier launched an ambitious project to implement a Continuous Odor Monitoring System (COMS) at one of its tire manufacturing plants in Romania. The primary goal was to identify and measure odor emissions and convert them into standardized values, thus complying with regulatory standards and enhancing the plant's environmental management.

SOLUTION

The project began with extensive testing and validation of Ellona’s WT1 Pro through Proofs of Concept (POCs). Two distinct POCs were conducted: direct emission monitoring at the source and odor impact monitoring at receptor points around the factory. Specialized sensors were integrated into the WT1 Pro to detect a range of odor compounds such as hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), mercaptans, alcohols, ozone (O₃), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), as well as suspended particles, temperature, relative humidity, pressure, sound level, and VOCs with PID.

Intelligent odor monitoring:

Challenges included the complexity of VOC composition and variable conditions at the source. Rigorous validation was essential to ensure the reliability of the SMO in these demanding environments. A two-phase approach (POC-A and POC-B) was adopted, using two equipped WT1 Pros and a dryer unit (DRYER), integrated with the EllonaSoft platform. Sampling and olfactometry campaigns were conducted by on-site experts to calibrate and adjust the monitoring models.

KEY RESULTS

  • Successful validation of the WT1 Pro performance with reliable data collected over a period of six months.
  • Precise characterization of emissions at 22 source points within the factory, including source identification, odor concentration quantification, and chemical composition analysis.
  • Increased compliance with local regulatory standards and proactive odor management, enabling the automotive supplier to maintain a healthier working and community environment.
