Issues
In 2021, Elior Services launched a pilot project in a school in Hauts-de-France to address significant challenges related to air quality and restroom cleanliness. The aim was to create a healthier and more conducive learning environment. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of clean air in limiting virus spread, while issues of comfort and cleanliness in restrooms are ongoing concerns for educational institutions. The primary goal of this project was to analyze the collected data to identify trends, establish benchmark thresholds, and test improvement measures. The project aimed to create a school environment where air quality, comfort, cleanliness, and student safety are continuously optimized.
SOLUTION
To address this crucial challenge for student health and well-being, Elior Services deployed Ellona sensors in the classrooms and restrooms of the school. These advanced sensors monitor CO₂ levels, temperature, relative humidity, and noise in real-time, providing municipal authorities and educational teams with accurate data on the school environment.
The monitoring platform allows for in-depth data analysis to adjust ventilation protocols, such as the initial health protocol, the POD2 protocol based on light indicators, the enhanced protocol, and continuous ventilation. Specific actions were taken to improve restroom comfort and safety, including adjustments to heating systems and door closure mechanisms.
The application of the MOX score has optimized cleaning schedules and methods, ensuring optimal sanitary conditions throughout the school day. This integrated approach has significantly improved the quality of life and learning at the school, laying the groundwork for effective environmental management in the future.
KEY RESULTS
Thanks to the deployment of Ellona sensors and the implementation of various ventilation and restroom management protocols, several significant benefits have been observed at the school in Hauts-de-France.
Air quality has notably improved, with better air confinement management and a reduction in fine particles, particularly due to the POD2 protocol. This has helped lower the risks of allergies, asthma, and virus transmission among students, while also enhancing cognitive performance.
Regarding restroom comfort, interventions on heating and door management have led to better thermal regulation, although additional adjustments are needed to maintain optimal conditions throughout the school day. Additionally, adaptive management of cleaning interventions based on usage levels has ensured optimal sanitary conditions, with controlled pollution levels and no concerning thresholds of volatile organic compounds detected.
In terms of safety, the detection of incidents and abnormal events has enabled a rapid response to potentially problematic situations, helping to reduce the risks of inappropriate behavior and serious incidents.
In conclusion, this pilot project with Elior Services has demonstrated that continuous monitoring and regular adjustment of measures are essential for maintaining a safe, healthy, and conducive learning environment. These results will serve as a foundation for developing future strategies aimed at further improving living and studying conditions within the school.
